Abstract: One of the strongest drivers of human behavior is the search for meaning, a pursuit that economists so far largely neglect when studying behavior and decision-making. We collect three types of data on a representative sample of the Dutch population to gain insight into what makes life meaningful and what differentiates meaningfulness and happiness: open questions, vignettes, and self-experienced meaning and happiness. We show that people strongly care about both happiness and meaning and that the drivers of a happy and meaningful life differ in important ways. Moreover, we find interesting and sizable gender differences.
