Professor Klaus Pfeffer was born in Aalen (Ostalb) in 1962 and studied medicine at the University of Ulm from 1981 to 1987. He earned his doctoral degree (Dr. med.) in 1988 and held a number of academic posts in Ulm, Munich and Toronto from 1987 to 1996. He received his venia legendi (Habilitation) at the Faculty of Medicine of Munich Technical University in the field of medical microbiology and immunology in 1996. In 1997 he was appointed Associate Professor for Medical Microbiology and Molecular Infection Immunology at the Institute of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Hygiene of the Technical University of Munich. From 1998 to 2002 he was the Institute’s Deputy Director.
In 2002 he was appointed Professor of Medical Microbiology at HHU and Director of the Institute of Medical Microbiology at Düsseldorf University Hospital. From 2002 to 2004 he was acting director of the Institute of Virology and since 2005 he has held the post of Director of the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hospital Hygiene at HHU.
In 2004 Professor Pfeffer was awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation. From 2006 to 2009 he was Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and from 2009 to 2012 he held the post of Vice-President for Structural Development at HHU. In addition, Professor Pfeffer was member of the Review Board “Microbiology, Virology and Immunology” of the German Research Foundation (DFG) from 2004 to 2012 and led the DFG Research Unit 729 “Anti-infectious Effector Programmes: Signals and Mediators” from 2007 to 2015. He has been Deputy Spokesperson of the Jürgen Manchot Research Group "Molecules of Infection" since 2009. From 2005 to 2012 Professor Pfeffer was chairperson of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig and chaired the Scientific Advisory Board of the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology in Borstel from 2012 to 2013.
Professor Pfeffer is member of a number of scientific committees and serves as reviewer for various research organisations and foundations. He is Honorary Professor of the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences. Professor Pfeffer is Vice-President for Strategic Management and Equal Opportunities of HHU’s Rectorate since November 2014.
