Winter semester 2021/22
HHU to apply Germany’s ‘3G’ model for a return to in-person teaching

On 11 October, lectures will resume at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) for new students on bachelor study programmes and on study programmes with state exams. HHU is preparing for most tuition to take place in person during the winter semester 2021/2022 in order to finally allow the students to return to some semblance of normal college life. Nevertheless the university is well prepared for all eventualities.

Back to the lecture hall? Fully vaccinated students and students with a negative coronavirus test or that have recovered from COVID-19 can return to in-person teaching in the coming winter semester, subject to mask wearing and social distancing rules.

“We are adopting what is referred to here in Germany as the ‘3G’ model, whereby students must be vaccinated, have recovered from coronavirus or provide a negative test result in order to gain access. It’s important to me that we retain in-person teaching. This is the only way to really experience university life properly. We also need a return of interdisciplinary discourse on campus, as its importance cannot be overstated”, says President Prof. Dr. Anja Steinbeck.

In order to make in-person tuition as safe as possible, only those who have been vaccinated, have recovered from or tested negative for coronavirus can attend. HHU will implement checks at the entrances to the lecture halls. Students with proof of vaccination can fast track entry checks by using a forgery-proof sticker. They can opt to place the sticker on their student ID card (‘HHU Card’). The sticker allows vaccinated students to get fast-track access to the lecture halls. The status of students who have recovered from or tested negative for coronavirus will be checked using the relevant documents each time they wish to enter the lecture halls.

In general, face masks must be worn in HHU buildings and lecture halls. Lecturers are not required to wear face masks while teaching. Face masks can be removed while seated, provided that a minimum distance of 1.5 metres from other people can be maintained. Mask wearing is also required outdoors in cases where it is not possible to comply with social distancing rules. This applies especially to queues that may form at the beginning of the semester in particular.

Short-term planning is centred around the constant changes in circumstances surrounding the pandemic. Consequently, HHU is prepared for a hybrid teaching approach if restrictions relating to coronavirus are reimposed during the winter semester. In any case, the experience of the last three ‘pandemic semesters’ will be used to make more online offerings available to students. In addition, HHU has retrofitted all of its lecture halls with an extensive technical infrastructure in order to facilitate recordings and interactive live streams.
