Work

International students who do not come from the EU, EEA or Switzerland may work 140 full or 280 half days or 20 hours per week in a year. You do not need permission from the foreigners’ authority for this. If you want to work more than 140 full or 280 half days or 20 hours per week in a year, you need permission from the foreigners’ authority.

Work as a research assistant or student assistant at a university or as a tutor at the Studierendenwerk student support organisation represents an exception to this: As long as this work does not impact your studies, it can be performed for an unlimited period of time. However, the foreigners’ authority must be informed of this.

International students from non-EU countries may only pursue self-employed economic activity with permission from the foreigners’ authority! Permission to pursue self-employed economic activity is already stated on some residence titles; a separate application is not necessary in such cases.

The ancillary provisions of the issued Fiktionsbescheinigung must be observed here.

You have submitted an application for the extension of your residence permit.

We would like to point out that, if you already have a valid residence title (in the meaning of Art. 4 (1) Sentence 2 AufenthG) and applied for the extension before its expiry, the old residence title is deemed to remain in force even after it expires (Art. 81 (4) Sentence 1 AufenthG). Any included work permit also remains valid. However, this does not apply for holders of a Schengen visa (visa for a short-term stay) who have applied for a residence permit.

No. However, as soon as you have found a suitable job, you can apply for a residence permit in accordance with Part 4 AufenthG.

If you do not yet have a concrete job offer and are looking for a job, you need a residence permit in accordance with Art. 20 (1) No. 1 AufenthG. It will be issued for a maximum period of 18 months and permits you to pursue economic activity without restrictions.

If you already have a job offer, you should apply for a residence permit to take up employment in accordance with Part 4 AufenthG (Arts. 18b – 21 AufenthG).

You should submit your application in writing to the functional e-mail address .
