Funding in the event of disabilities and chronic illnesses

Stays abroad within Europe under the Erasmus programme:

Disadvantaged students can apply for additional funding (Social Top Up) of €250 per month for their stay abroad within Europe.
Eligible students:
- Students with a child/children
- Students with a disability
- Students with a chronic illness
- Students in ongoing employment
- First-generation academics

Please refer to the pages Erasmus Study Stay Abroad or Erasmus Traineeships fpr more information about the Social Top Up.

Stays abroad outside the framework of the Erasmus programme:

If you have additional costs to bear while abroad due to a disability or chronic illness, you can apply for additional funding as a grant recipient. If you have a degree of disability of at least 50%, you are eligible for funding for all special expenses incurred explicitly as a result of or during your stay abroad. You can only receive the funding where the expenses are not covered – not even in part – elsewhere (e.g. by your social insurance agency). When applying for the funding, please send your application in writing (by post or e-mail) to the International Office at HHU.
You need:

  1. A copy of your disabled person’s pass
  2. A table showing the expected total expenses (including coverage by other institutions where applicable)
  3. Proof that you have not received any support from elsewhere

For stays abroad with a child/children, you can apply for a Family Mobility Grant for stays abroad outside the framework of the Erasmus programme.

The Counselling Centre for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses (BBST) would be happy to support you if you have further questions.
