At www.hhu.de/60jahre (German only), HHU – which describes itself on the social media platform Bluesky as “Young. Brutalist. Good-looking.” – shows that it has much more to offer than just five faculties and 92 study programmes. Many of the events are aimed at all those who study, research and work at HHU, while some events are also open to city society and the interested public.
If you click through the programme, you will learn for example that the striking domed greenhouse in the Botanical Garden has been charming visitors with its futuristic appearance for 50 years now. And that the PHOS photo group – which grew out of a course at the adult education centre – has used creative techniques to show HHU in a new light. That’s not the only exhibition either: The tenth anniversary of the popular “pART of Research” calendar is also being celebrated in this way.
There are a number of events for students, including the popular Ideas Competition organised by the Center for Entrepreneurship Düsseldorf (CEDUS) and the Demo Day, where HHU spin-offs and start-ups introduce themselves and inspire others with their stories. Further highlights will be added over the course of the year, so it’s always worth checking the calendar periodically.
History in images and facts
A significant birthday is always a good opportunity to browse through old photos. They accompany the history of the University of Düsseldorf, which arose from the “Düsseldorf Academy of Practical Medicine”, later the “Medical Academy in Düsseldorf”. In 1988, the Senate then decided to adopt the name “Heinrich Heine University” and, exactly 25 years ago, a manor house also became part of the university: Schloss Mickeln was inaugurated as a guest house and conference centre at a ceremony held in 2000.
