Chemistry
Bachelor of Science
Short description
In the chemistry bachelor programme, students acquire a thorough knowledge of the basic rules that determine the composition and properties of compounds and materials.
Entry/Admission requirements
Entry requirements for the bachelor's degree programme in chemistry are general university maturity (high school diploma) and good knowledge of German (DSH-2). The programme can be started in the winter and summer term. Applications for admission can be made directly to the university.
Applicants for higher semesters need recognition of their academic achievements by the Chemistry Examination Board.
Programme content
After establishing the basics in mathematics, physics and especially general chemistry, all aspects of modern chemistry are addressed comprising contributions from inorganic, organic and physical chemistry as well as biochemistry, quantum chemistry, analytical and polymer chemistry.
Students develop their capability to address chemical problems on a scientific molecular level. Laboratory courses form an integral part of the study programme. Students also improve their presentation and communication skills. An elective subject and an independent, research-oriented bachelor's thesis which is carried out in one of the research groups provide an individual characteristic.
Programme structure
The bachelor program in chemistry leads to a bachelor of science (BSc) within 6 semesters. Lectures, seminars and laboratory courses are combined into modules. Individual profiling through elective modules and a achelor thesis takes place in the 6th semesters.
The study programme has repeatedly been appproved by ASIIN (last in 2018). A workload (expressed in ECTS points) is assigned to every module (the complete bachelor programme comprises a total of 180 ECTS points).
Detailed information
Programme objectives/Career prospects
The graduates have the technical and methodological tools to address chemical problems on a molecular level.
Although the BSc degree qualifies to start a professional career, most graduates prefer to enter a subsequent master programme in order to improve their scientific qualification which is a prerequisite to obtainn a doctoral degree.
