Programme content

Our Master's degree in Linguistics is research-oriented and is based on a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics. It introduces students to current research and creates the conditions for independent scientific work. Apart from an expansion of the students’ general knowledge of linguistics, students will acquire detailed skills in
a specific branch of linguistics and knowledge of a single, specific language. In the Tutorial Team Project, students will acquire didactic skills suited for higher education. They will
also be trained in high-level team work. The content of the Master's programme in Linguistics is divided into seven modules. In six of the seven modules, courses that are related thematically, methodologically or systematically are bundled together. The team project is the seventh module.

The prerequisite for admission is a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics or a comparable degree programme with an overall grade of 2. 5 or better. Alternatively, access can be gained via a placement test. Good English language skills are also required. The programme can be started in the summer and winter semesters.

As a student of this Master's programme, you will be trained as a scientist who is able to carry out research tasks independently at universities, research institutions or in industry. A doctoral degree can be taken up if the graduation results are good.

Programme structure

The course is theoretically oriented and, on the basis of a bachelor's degree in linguistics, conveys the ability to work independently as a scientist, including initial teaching experience.

The program has five key components, structure in 7 modules:

  • Deepening of knowledge in the core areas of linguistics
  • Creation of an area of specialization in linguistics: Phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax, semantics and pragmatics, psycho- and neurolinguistics, computational linguistics or typology
  • Gaining and learning how to apply advanced methods from the core and interdisciplinary areas of linguistics
  • Improvement of language skills and in-depth study of a
  • foreign language (e. g. English, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, or German as a foreign language)
  • Didactic internship in the form of a tutorial on a course of the Bachelor’s program in a team of tutors with didactic supervision.

Programme objectives/Career prospects

This program is research-oriented and can prepare students for entry into a related PhD program. However, knowledge about the complexity of human languages -- linguistics -- is useful in many careers. Our master’s program equips students with the necessary academic skills for a career within or outside of academia. The individual qualifications of the respective chosen areas determine possible occupational fields. These fields include foreign language teaching, occupations in media and journalism, coaching, PR and marketing, development of textbooks, programming and artificial intelligence or data analysis.

However, neither the Bachelor’s, nor the Master’s Program qualify for a job as a speech therapist or clinic linguist.
