Business Chemistry
Bachelor of Science
Short description
The Bachelor´s program in business chemistry at the Heinrich-Heine-University Dusseldorf is subject to a local restriction admission (NC). Application is possible online at the Stiftung Hochschulrat via the Dialogue-oriented Service Procedure (Dialogorientiertes Service Verfahren).
The program is organized by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics and provides the first level of professional qualification within 7 semesters.
Entry/Admission requirements
Access to the program is restricted by a local restriction admission. No prior special training or industry internships are required. Scientific interest and joy in solving chemical problems and business challenges are helpful.
Currently, there are 70 admissions per year.
Programme content
The program “business chemistry” is a combination of the experimentally oriented field of chemistry and the field of business administration and leads to the first professional qualification within 7 semesters. Herein, students acquire proficiency in both chemical sciences and economic knowledge.
Students will to evaluate scientific problem with respect to the economical background. Typical job opportunities are found in chemistry-related industry.
The interdisciplinary, interconnected education includes theoretical and practical aspects in chemistry as well as business administration and national economy. The students can choose from different moduls from both areas according to their personal specialization.
All facilities are in close proximity on the campus. The actual number of admissions per year is currently restricted to 70. Due to the limited number of students in the classes learning is facilitated.
Programme structure
Based on the recommendation of the national organisations GDCh and VCI the program is based on training in the core areas of chemistry and business administration. In contrast to other programs, where initial training in chemistry is later extended to an economical background, the program at the HHU Dusseldorf offers parallel training in both areas from the first semester facilitating adaption into the different cultures of science, ways of problem solving, and scientific communication.
The program provides the first level of professional qualification within seven semesters and includes theoretical as well as profound practical training in the laboratory forming the basis for potential continuation of the study in the context of research-oriented Master´s program.
The basic scientific training includes the core areas inorganic and organic chemistry as well as physical chemistry in addition to training in business administration and national economy. On this basis student can choose related interdisciplinary areas such as biochemistry, macromolecular chemistry, theoretical chemistry, bank and insurance management, marketing, or international relations. The student can choose individually from additional specialized classes depending on their specific scientific interests.
The program is completed with the Bachelor´s thesis, addressing a scientific problem in a chemical or an economy institute.
Due to the substantial module load, in particular by the practical classes, presence time on campus are high. For better organization of different modules, please refer to the Studienverlaufsplan. Detailed description of available classes and modules are found in the Modulhandbuch.
Programme objectives/Career prospects
Meeting the aspect of internationality in business chemistry a broad, optional training includes business language classes in English, Spanish, French, or Italian.
The Heinrich-Heine-University is part of a network with other universities and research institutes providing various opportunities for participation in exchange programs, internships and presentations of global player companies.
The BSc degree in business chemistry is accepted in Germany and abroad as qualification to Master´s programs. Most of our students choose to continue studies in either the Master in Chemistry or Master in Business Administration at the HHU Dusseldorf.
Based on their special qualification our graduates are highly sought for central positions in chemical or pharmaceutical companies as well as in chemicals trading and consulting. In addition, graduates benefit from the dual training in controlling instruments and scientific problem management.
