Italian and German: Language, Media, Translation
Master of Arts
Admission to this four-semester Master of Arts (M.A.) programme is unrestricted upon “Proof of special suitability” (Heinrich Heine University is directly responsible for processing the application and determining applicants’ suitability) and can be started in the summer semester or the winter semester.
The M.A. in Italian: Language, Media, Translation at Heinrich Heine University is geared primarily to bachelors students specialising in Italian linguistics and with a knowledge of Italian to C1 level (European Framework). The programme is particularly suited to applicants coming from Italian migrant backgrounds.
The M.A. in Italian: Language, Media, Translation with an integrated semester abroad at Turin University teaches students in-depth skills in core areas of Italian applied linguistics and is characterised by a consistently contrastive approach and a strong professional practice component.
The specialisations on this M.A. are selected such that the study of Italian is centred around three socially relevant and applied thematic areas that also make up the intended career paths leading on from the programme:
Foreign-language teaching and linguistics (module: Teaching language), media with an Italian link (module: Language and Media), translation in different contexts (module: Tedesco-Italiano: un confronto). The students acquire and train practical skills in an applied language module (Lingua – Testi – Contesti) and an 8-week cooperative education phase (internship).
To conclude, the students hone their profile by means of individual course combinations in a field of the student’s choosing (general elective).
Programme objectives/Career prospects
On the M.A. in Italian: Language, Media, Translation, students practice foreign-language teaching skills, market-ready literary and professional translation as well as a creative approach to (digital) media.
Italian: Language, Media, Translation thus qualifies students for the following three professional areas, among others:
- Foreign-language teaching (schoolbook and dictionary publishers with foreign-language sections, adult education, country and culture-specific training in companies)
- Translation (literary translation into German, professional translation, creating translation software)
- Media (intercultural communication within the scope of PR work for companies, publishers and cultural institutions).
