Entry/Admission requirements

Admission requirement is the general or relevant Abitur (high school graduation). Since a very good English language competence (level B2) is a prerequisite for a successful study progress, a placement test (Oxford Online Placement Test) prior to starting the program must be passed.

Programme content

The three years of study are divided into three phases, which become progressively more academically challenging. In the first year of study, basic knowledge in the areas of linguistics, cultural and literary studies is taught, relating to different regions and epochs of the English-speaking world. At the same time, your language skills are deepened and improved.

The second study phase expands the already acquired knowledge in more freely selectable seminars. In addition, special courses focus on research competence and the writing of academic papers. At the same time, language skills classes concentrate on writing and presentation techniques.

In the final study phase, students may choose the topics of their seminars and write papers in their own fields of interest. Topics may refer to literature, film, painting, new media, varieties of English or empirical language research. The program in English as a major is concluded by an academic thesis, which is supervised by a professor or assistant professor.

A semester abroad is not compulsory, but is strongly recommended and supported by numerous partner universities of our institute.
