The digital application process for compensation for disadvantages
From the winter semester 2025/26 onwards, it will be possible to submit applications for compensation for disadvantages in the case of a disability or chronic illness digitally.
Currently ongoing application processes are not affected by this.
The graphic can also be opened as a PDF file.
The application should be submitted as early as possible – ideally at the start of the semester.
The BBST can provide consultion. If desired, a written recommendation can be issued.
A medical certificate from a general practitioner or specialist doctor is always required for disadvantage compensation. We recommend bringing the BBST info letter for doctors with you to the appointment.
The English forms are a translation/fill-in help for guidance only. The original German application and medical certificate must be completed and submitted. Only the German version is legally binding.
The application must be submitted via the digital workflow using the HHU email address at least six weeks before the exam registration deadline.
If, in exceptional circumstances, you wish to submit your application by postal mail, please use cover sheet B.
A medical certificate must be attached as a PDF file. It is recommended that you include a recommendation from the BBST with your application. Reasons may also be explained in a free text field.
The examination board makes a decision usually within four weeks, which is communicated to the Registrar’s Office via workflow.
Possible results are: approval, approval with modifications, or rejection. Reasons are given in each case.
Inquiries about the processing status should be sent to the Registrar’s Office.
The notification is usually sent by post by the Registrar’s Office within two weeks.
Student can decide for themselves whether to take up the compensation.
If they decide to do so, they must notify the examiners during the exam registration or, in the case of a new application, two weeks before of the exam.
If students disagree with the decision of the examination board, they can send a complaint to the commissioner for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses, Professor Dr Dietrich.
A (further) consultation at the BBST is also possible.
