Kurzinformationen

Kurzbeschreibung

The course of studies Computational Linguistics, Bachelor of Arts, at the heinrich-Heine-University (HHU) is an admission-free course of studies.

This six-semester course is offered jointly by the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the HHU.

Studieneinstieg/Zugangsvoraussetzungen

The admission requirement for the Bachelor's programme in Computational Linguistics is the general or relevant subject-specific higher education entrance qualification.

Studieninhalte

The integrated Bachelor's Programme in Computational Linguistics

. . . is both theory and practice oriented, interdisciplinary, international and at the pulse of time.

. . . started in winter semester 2017/2018 at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf.

. . . comprises the three subjects of Computational Linguistics, Linguistics and Computer Science.

Computational linguistics is an established interface subject that applies computer science methods to linguistic questions. On the theoretical side, attempts are made to analyse and understand human language using mathematically sound models. On the practical side, these models are used to develop software tools that enable machine processing of natural speech data.

Computational linguistics is therefore incredibly diverse, just like human language itself.

Studienverlauf

The Bachelor of Computational Linguistics teaches both theoretical and practical aspects of the subject. If you are interested in language, but are also open to the disciplines of computer science and mathematics, you are in good hands with this course. Programming knowledge is not a prerequisite and is taught in a practical way within the framework of the basic modules. The basic modules are followed by specialisation in informatics and linguistics.

In the introductory phase of your studies, you will acquire basic knowledge in the areas of linguistics, logic and computer science. In addition to an overview of the current state of research, you will learn the skills you need to grasp and describe phenomena and problems in computational linguistics.

From the third semester onwards, you will enter deeper into more complex areas of computer linguistics. They teach to implement more complex programming projects and to develop solutions for specific computer linguistic tasks. In addition, there is the opportunity to further deepen your newly acquired knowledge in linguistics and computer science.

The course is completed with a Bachelor's thesis in which you work independently on a question of your own choice and demonstrate that you have mastered the theory and practice of computational linguistic research.

Studienziele/Berufsperspektiven

Since the computer linguistic sector is gaining in importance in industry and business, the demand for well-trained computer linguists has risen sharply recently. Thanks to the well-founded, versatile training, computer linguists are also in demand in many other areas. For example, you can perform tasks in the following fields of activity:

Machine translation, Text generation, e. g. for online shops Language data analysis for marketing purposes (social media monitoring) Lexicographic activities (computer-aided dictionary creation) Development or optimization of search engines, Automatic author recognition or style analysis of texts Development of dialogue systems such as Siri, Cortana, Google Now.
