Professor Heidrun Dorgeloh, born 1962 in Münster, studied English and Romance Studies as well as Business Administration at Justus Liebig University Giessen, the London School of Economics and Université de Paris II (Sciences Economiques). She has taught and researched at the Department of English and American Studies at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf since 1991. After receiving her Ph.D. in English Linguistics in 1994, she completed her Habilitation for the subject of English Language and Linguistics in 2014. In 2021, she was appointed Professor for English Language and Linguistics.
Heidrun Dorgeloh’s research interests include syntax and grammar, text and discourse, genres and languages for specific purposes, as well as argumentative discourse. She has participated in international research collaborations and the HHU interdisciplinary research initiative “Deep Linguistic Modelling”. The primary focus of her work lies on varying grammar use, depending on text and situation. A textbook on this subject, written in cooperation with a colleague from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was published in 2022, introducing students to empirical work, in particular to corpus-based project work, in this area. She works as a reviewer for scientific journals on a regular basis.
Heidrun Dorgeloh is head of the Students’ Office at the Department of English and American Studies. She is committed to providing good study advice and ensuring academic feasibility. She makes particular efforts to raise awareness of career perspectives for students in the humanities through various teaching projects and in her classes. She was a member of the Senate from 2007 to 2020, spokesperson for the academic staff from 2011 to 2020 and Deputy Chair of the Senate from 2015 to 2020.
