Vice President Professor Dr Axel Görlitz

Vice President for Quality in Studies and Teaching

Professor Dr Axel Görlitz was born in Augsburg on 18 January 1968. He studied physics at Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) in Munich and the State University of New York at Stony Brook, completing his doctorate in 1999 under the supervision of Professor Hänsch in Munich. After gaining his Ph.D., he undertook a two-year postdoctorate stay at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, before moving to the University of Stuttgart as a research assistant and later as an Emmy Noether junior research group leader.

Axel Görlitz has been professor of experimental physics at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf since 2003. His research focuses on the creation and characterisation of ultracold atomic and molecular quantum gases. One particular aim of this research is to investigate and harness quantum effects in multi-particle systems close to absolute zero.

Professor Görlitz was a member of the Senate of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf from 2011 to 2024 and Dean of Studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences from 2012 to 2024. From 2020 to 2022 during the coronavirus pandemic, he headed the Teaching Task Force at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, which was tasked with enabling good teaching operations despite the necessary restrictions.
