HHU offers many different types of support, which you can find listed below.

Emergencies: In addition to serious injuries, accidents, etc., these also include acute psychoses, persons displaying self-harming, self-endangering behaviour or pronounced suicidal thoughts. 

The autonomous Accessibility Department is part of the General Student’s Committee (AStA) and thus part of the highest-ranking organisation representing the interests of students vis-à-vis the University.

The staff at the Accessibility Department are on hand to support you with regard to all questions and barriers you encounter in the course of your studies and are constantly on the lookout for new ideas and suggestions for making the campus and university life in general more accessible.

“The Accessibility Department acts a point of contact for the concerns of students with disabilities and offers uncomplicated assistance. If you have a disability, chronic and/or mental illness, we would be pleased to support you in any way we can. You are also always welcome to contact us even if you do not have a disability.

Together we will do our best to eliminate existing barriers in your studies. As representatives of student interests, we seek direct and straightforward communication with employees in the faculties, administration, etc. to achieve quick and flexible solutions for you.

In addition, we can provide advice on topics such as accessible living, leisure activities, sports options, stays abroad, etc. and everything that can make your day-to-day life easier. In the case of specific questions, the team can also put you in touch with the right contacts.”

The Psychotherapeutic Institute Outpatient Clinic (PIA) is a psychological-psychotherapeutic facility at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. We offer you qualified help with psychosocial problems and mental illnesses. The psychotherapeutic treatment is based on the latest findings from psychotherapy research and is subject to constant scientific control. (Information from the PIA Düsseldorf homepage).

  • You can contact the PIA and obtain counselling if you are suffering from the following and other conditions: depressive disorders, anxiety, insomnia, paruresis, nightmares, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, PTSD, chronic pain and mental health issues relating to chronic illnesses, somatic symptom disorders.

The Studierendenwerk Düsseldorf (organisation that provides economic, health-related, cultural and social support services for students) offers advice on the following topics:

  • Planning your studies and assessing what personal assistance is required
  • Financing additional needs resulting from a disability and/or illness
  • Applying for grants
  • Obtaining information on compensation for disadvantages and contacting the responsible individuals at the University
  • Establishing contacts (disability representatives, student advisory service, lecturers)
