Personal assistance/assistance with studies

People with disabilities can obtain support from personal assistants to help them lead self-determined lives. These assistants help with activities that individuals cannot manage alone due to e.g. physical limitations. It is important to be aware that assistance is not the same as care. Assistance can be obtained in various areas of life, for example during studies.

Depending on where you live in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), either the Rheinland Municipal Association (Landschaftsverband Rheinland – LVR) or the Westfalen-Lippe Municipal Association (Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe – LWL) is responsible for “integration assistance to enable university attendance” (“Eingliederungshilfe zum Besuch einer Hochschule”) or “assistance with vocational education, university studies or further training for a job” (“services to help people with disabilities undertake studies”) (“schulischer Berufsausbildung, Hochschulausbildung oder Weiterbildung für einen Beruf” (“Leistungen zur Teilhabe an Bildung”)).

It may be beneficial to work with an assistance service to organise support. An assistance service can for example prepare a service plan and provide support during the application submission process. With a view to the application procedure, it is advisable to contact the responsible funding body.
The BBST also provides advice on this topic.
