Silencium - Time and space to complete academic work

As a young female academic/scientist with family commitments, you face multiple burdens, which make it more difficult to have a successful academic career.

Do you need some “space” to complete your bachelor’s or master’s thesis? Would you be glad to have another week to polish your dissertation or habilitation? Do you need to concentrate on finishing a publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal? Are you working on an application for third-party funding and need some more time?

The Central Equal Opportunities Officer supports the careers of female academics by financing childcare to enable you to complete an academic work.

This offer also applies for individuals whose position is comparable with a position held by a person with a university employment contract (female postdocs with a grant or own funding, “employee-like” position).
The offer does not apply for the Medical Faculty and individuals with an employment contract with the Medical Faculty and/or University Hospital Düsseldorf. The Medical Faculty offers its own programme – please see the website of the Medical Faculty.

Women who are

  • students on a bachelor’s or master’s study programme
  • PhD students
  • postdocs
  • junior professors (W1)
  • Max. 5 days of childcare per year per applicant
  • Up to 8 hours per day
  • Max. €12.50/hour (max. €500 per year per applicant)
  • Childcare during off-peak times and at weekends (outside regular childcare times); also: during the (partial) closure of schools and childcare facilities due to the coronavirus!
  • The person undertaking the childcare is not permitted to be related to the child.
  • You can organise someone yourself to care for your child in a home environment. In this context, we refer to the Coronavirus Protection Ordinance of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (Corona-Schutzverordnung des Landes NRW). It is important that it is always the same person who cares for the child/children in a home environment.

The childcare costs, which you are applying for the reimbursement of, may only be incurred after consultation with the Central Equal Opportunities Officer. To apply for reimbursement, please complete and submit the expense form (see below). Childcare costs will be reimbursed for children up to 12 years of age and for children with special needs until the end of the compulsory schooling period. For children under the age of three, costs will also be reimbursed to the extent specified above during regular childcare hours if no nursery place or similar is available.
The funding will be transferred directly to the person undertaking the childcare and not to the parents of the child being cared for. A Silencium can also be taken during parental leave.

Women who are

  • enrolled in a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD study programme or
  • employed as a member of the academic staff at HHU or
  • appointed to a W1 professorship at HHU
