Child care (age 0-5)

Places for child daycare are limited. We therefore recommend to arrange childcare in good time before your arrival.

In Germany, you can choose between two types of child care: in-home daycare providers or daycare centers (Kindergarten).

In-home daycare providers and babysitters:

In general, in-home daycare providers take care of children under the age of 3 in their home. Often they care for additional children (3-5) as well, so your child is having contact to peers. Fees are charged based on parental income.

Qualified in-home daycare providers can be found via the Youth Welfare Office in Düsseldorf or asked the HHU Family Support Center for assistance.

Babysitters take care of your children for a few hours or in the evening. The Family Support Center of HHU can assist you in finding qualified babysitters. Please contact the FamilienBeratungsBüro per email at:

Daycare centers:

Daycare centers are for children between the ages of 3 months and 6 years (school-age). In general care is provided from 7:00 am - 2:00 or 5:00 pm. If possible, please contact the daycare centers already before your arrival to reserve a place for your child. Fees are charged based on the parental income and the number of hours your child will spend in the day-care center per week.

An overview of all daycare centers in Düsseldorf can be found at the KiTA-Navigator of the Youth Welfare Office.

Further assistance will also be provided by the Family Support Center of HHU.
