Erasmus Traineeships
Erasmus traineeships (SMP) and other traineeships in Europe
HHU students can receive a grant for traineeships in Erasmus countries for periods of 2 – 6 months. Please seek a traineeship place yourself or with support from your subject representatives. You can find sample agreements for your use in the download area on the right. The International Office cannot provide support for this.
Please apply for the traineeship directly to the International Office, observing the following deadlines:
Dates & Deadlines
Start of the traineeship abroad | Application deadline | Online application |
1 February to 31 May | 1 November | 1 September to 1 November |
1 June to 30 September | 1 March | 1 January to 1 March |

Please read the general information first.
Then read the experience reports submitted by fellow students.
You can find reports written by students from other universities on the DAAD website (German only):
The conditions for receiving Erasmus funding vary from year to year. A new project is launched every year. The conditions that apply for you depend on the timing of your traineeship. You can find the corresponding fact sheet with the conditions for funding in the download area:
The 2023 project applies for traineeships starting from October 2023 – September 2024
The 2024 project applies for traineeships starting from October 2024 – September 2025
Use the corresponding checklist in the download area to ensure you do not miss out a step.
Applications are categorised into the following three areas:
- Clinical internship year (medicine)
- Mandatory traineeships
- Voluntary traineeships
If there are more applications than available funds, the funding per application round will be shared out proportionally between the three areas mentioned above.
- The Medical Faculty conducts an internal selection process.
- In the case of mandatory traineeships and voluntary traineeships, the decision is made by lot.
The International Office funds traineeships outside the Erasmus region via Mobility Grants.
