Public transport

Düsseldorf has an excellent public transportation system to travel in and around Düsseldorf or to neighbouring cities. HHU offers the following discounts for their employees and students:

A monthly pass (monthly ticket) is one of the most convenient and reasonable ways for regular customers to travel. In the framework of the cooperation with the University Hospital Düsseldorf, employees of Heinrich Heine University are granted a price reduction of 12% for their monthly ticket at the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR).

Tariffs and benefits of a monthly pass can be found here.

Notes:

You are entitled to a monthly pass only with an employment contract of minimum 12 months

To apply for a ticket, please send the completed application form "Bestellschein/MitarbeiterTicket" with the additional form "Abholung MitarbeiterTicket" to UKD, Ms. Schmitt, D04.1, Moorenstraße 5, 40225 Düsseldorf. Find the form here

Further information can also be found at the service websites of  Dezernat 3 (Employees).

As a dotoral student, you can use your student ID as a ticket for public transportation in and around Düsseldorf, as well as for regional transport by DB (Deutsche Bahn) throughout North-Rhine-Westphalia.

You can use all buses, subways and street cars and the slower trains of Deutsche bahn (RE, NRW-Express). It's not allowed to use EC, IC and ICE trains.

Your semester ticket is personal and not transferable. Therefore, you have to take your valid semester ticket along with an official photo ID (national ID, passport or driver's license) when travelling with public transport in case of a ticket inspection.

You can find the rail links throughout North-Rhine-Westphalia here.

Please note that there are some so called "transition zones" to which the NRW-ticket doesn't allow you to travel. These transition zones are shown on this map.

Note:

You can only use the 2nd class on trains.

You can take along one adult or up to 3 children under the age of 15 from Mondays to Fridays only after 7:00 pm, on weekends and public holidays only in VRR-area.

Children aged six or up require tickets at child rates. Children under the age of 6 travel free of charge if accompanied.
