Biology
Bachelor of Science

Short description

Short description

Biology is the study of life and living organisms including their molecular processes, physiology, development and evolution. Building upon experimental observations and through the use of state-of-the-art molecular methods, the fundamental features of life can be deciphered at an empirical and theoretical level.

Entry/Admission requirements

A general university entrance qualification (e.g. Abitur) is required for admission into the bachelor's degree programme in Biology. Under very restricted conditions, enrollment is possible without a high school diploma. Student enrollment is restricted by a local grade point average (numero clausus) and courses are mainly taught in German. Interested first-time students should apply online according to the DoSV procedure. Potential applicants for higher semesters must provide an official transcript of their prior academic coursework / university training.

Programme content

The bachelor's degree in biology covers the foundations of biology, as well as the necessary fundamentals of chemistry, physics and mathematics. Coursework extends beyond these fundamental courses to cover interdisciplinary competences, including scientific writing and scientific presentation. Special emphasis is placed on mastering state-of-the-art methods and independent laboratory research. From the 5th semester onwards, students can further specialize in specific disciplines within biology. HHU offers a wide range of specialized research areas including, but not limited to: biochemistry, bioinformatics, biotechnology, cell biology, developmental biology, evolution, genetics, genomics, microbiology, molecular biology, structural biology, and synthetic biology.

Programme structure

In the first four semesters, coursework includes the basics of biology and the fundamentals of chemistry, physics and mathematics. During the course of study, a student can choose between two parallel programmes (the application process for the 4-year study programme takes place in the fourth semester):

Programme objectives/Career prospects

A bachelor's degree in biology serves as a first professional qualification and is a requirement for numerous master's programmes in biology or as an entry into most professional careers, for example in the life sciences and health sector. Graduates of the 4-year alternative Bachelor Biology International have the opportunity to enroll into a one-year master's programme or directly join some doctoral programmes
