Biochemistry
Bachelor of Science

Short description

Short description

In the biochemistry programme, the subjects of biology and chemistry are combined to understand the molecular processes of life.

Entry/Admission requirements

Entry requirements for the bachelor's degree programme in biochemistry are general university maturity (high school diploma) and good knowledge of German (DSH-2). The start of the study (first semester) is the winter semester. The approval is subject to a local restricted admission. Applications for a place to study are submitted online in the DoSV process. Applicants for higher semesters need recognition of their academic achievements by the Biochemistry Examination Board.

Programme content

After establishing the basics in mathematics, physics and especially biology and chemistry, the programme focuses on biochemistry and enzyme technology. Electoral subjects and an independent, research-oriented bachelor's thesis provide an individual characteristic. The offered topics range from chemical synthesis and molecular biology to biomedicine.

Programme structure

The bachelor's degree program "Biochemistry" leads to a bachelor of science (BSc) in 6 semesters. Lectures, seminars and laboratory internships are combined into modules. Individual profiling through elective modules and bachelor's thesis takes place in the 5th and 6th semesters.

In the course of their studies, students who are particularly interested can apply for the 8-semester course variant PLUS/International with an integrated stay abroad. The 5th and 6th semesters will be completed at a partner university. The research-oriented in-depth phase of the 7th and 8th semesters completes the course of study.

More details and information can be found on the homepage of the programme.

Programme objectives/Career prospects

The graduates have the technical and methodological tools to investigate bioscience issues at the molecular level. Most graduates opt for in-depth training in a master's degree program. The range is very diverse and includes biology, chemistry, biotechnology, toxicology and biomedicine in addition to biochemistry. The pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology or quality control and quality management in the food industry are eligible for a professional activity.

The BachelorPLUS/International graduates have the opportunity to choose a one-year master's degree or to join a doctoral programme directly.
